NPF Indiana Dunes YA Crew – HP (PO-00735599)

Ever wanted a chance to work at a National Park? Here is your chance! The Student Conservation Association team (SCA) is looking for self-identified individuals from black, indigenous and people of color communities. The crew will provide services at three locations within Indiana Dunes National Park: West Beach, Portage Lakefront, and Great Marsh. These areas have been identified in the Parks Resource Stewardship Strategy as priority resource areas for conservation and restoration work.

This crew will consist of 1 crew leader and 3 crew memebers. 

Program Dates: 
August 28th – Decmeber 15th ( Monday – Friday ) 7:00 am CDT – 2:30 pm CDT

Compensation: 
Crew Members will be paid a wage of $16/hour.

Location: 
The crew will meet daily at 1100 North Mineral Springs Rd.  Porter, IN 46304

Qualification: 
Must at least 18 years of age. 
Prefereance given to local candidates. 

The Crew Will Assist With But Not Limited To:
Native seed collection
Invasive species rehmoval
Monitor 4 miles of trail
Engage with park visitors

Native plant instillation

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was given a National Park status (Indiana Dunes National Park) on February 15, 2019. Following designation of a National Park, park visitation has increased by over 21 percent (1.7 million to 3.0 million per year). Project work will be conducted in high visitor use areas.   Improvement of park views and educational opportunities will be provided.  

Training provided to the SCA team by NPS staff may include: 
Plant identification 
Site orientation 
Ecological restoration objectives and techniques 
Brush cutter operation 
Herbicide application 
Interpretive skills for non-interpreters 

Use of Biocontrol agents for control of Purple Loosestrife
