Natural Resources Intern (Invasive Plants and Restoration) (PO-00732016)

Anticipated Backfill Position Dates of 07/05/2022 – 12/31/2022. 

Duties will focus on invasive plant management (~33%), native plant restoration (~33%), and damage mitigation (~33%).  Invasive plant work includes mapping and treating invasive plant infestations. Treatment may involve the use of herbicide, as well as hand and power tools. Mapping will be performed using a tablet or hand held GPS device. Some work monitoring vegetation plots may also occur. Restoration field duties include planting, installing vertical mulch, site monitoring, and irrigating plantings. Damage mitigation tasks include mapping and mitigating visitor caused damage, mainly off-highway vehicle damage and graffiti removal. Will involve traveling throughout the Park and the use of 4WD vehicles. 

This position requires bending, lifting, and other tasks with repetitive movements. Interns will sometimes work independently, but usually with a group of staff and sometimes with volunteers. They may also assist with other projects in the Resources division.

Compensation amounts:
•    $1,100 – one time RT travel allowance
•    $850 – monthly housing allowance (interns must identify and secure their own housing)
•    $275 – weekly living allowance
•    AmeriCorps eligible ($2,417 education award and health insurance)

Training Provided: First aid/CPR; 4WD, search and rescue; on-line or in-house training for ArcGIS; other safety training.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Opportunities to attend local symposiums or conferences that relate to natural resource management are possible. Also you may be supported in starting individual "pilot" studies; however it will depend on scheduling, duration of internship, and funds.

Members will live in 29 Palms, CA, their housing will be located within 8 miles from Headquarters. Members will need their personal vehicle to buy groceries and other personal items. The closest airport is about 55 miles from town.
