Mio Ranger District Recreation Intern (PO-00735013)

The Mio Ranger District Recreation Interns will work to support the Mio Ranger District Recreation Department on the Huron-Manistee National Forests. Located in the northern part of the lower Peninsula of Michigan the Mio Ranger District operates a busy recreation program that manages over 30 popular recreation sites that include developed and dispersed campground and day use sites. The Au Sable Wild and Scenic River is managed by the recreation program and is a popular river for floating as well as a premier trout fishing stream. Finally, the program manages almost 300 miles of trail, most of which is motorized.

This position will work to support the recreation program by performing daily and deferred facility maintenance at multiple recreation sites. Interns may also interact with Forest Visitors to provide education and guidance about the local area as well as Forest regulations. 

This position is heavily motorized and applicants should be able to operate full-sized pick-up trucks and be able to pull a trailer. Additionally, power tools such as brushers, riding lawnmowers, and chainsaws are used, and applicants should be able to learn the safe operations of power tools. 

Primary Duties

  • Trailhead and recreation site maintenance, public interaction (50%)
  • Trail maintenance (20%)
  • Special project negotiated with supervisor (20%)
  • Support other District Program areas (10%)

Compensation:
– $300/week Living Allowance*
– $1,100 Travel Allowance*, paid once with first paycheck
– Housing on-site
– Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,718.25, to be received upon successful completion of position
– Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority

Training Provided: Training opportunities related to recreation operations as well as possible cross training in other departments as work load and timing allows.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Members will have the opportunity to learn about Forest Service recreation operations as well other departmental operations. Recreation is centered around local outdoor recreation which focuses on aquatic (lake and river) and motorized recreation.

Mio is located in a rural area and is heavily dependent on road travel. There is no public transit to/from/or within Mio. While amenities are available in Mio interns without a vehicle will be severely limited in their ability to travel.

Housing are two bunkhouses located approximately 1/2 mile from the ranger station. The houses are standard homes with several bedrooms, a shared kitchen with limited stock, shared bathroom and basic furniture. Bedrooms may be shared with one other person (two to a room) and is subject to change depending on Covid restrictions. Internet is not provided by the government, however those using housing may opt to purchase internet and have it connected to the house at their own expense. Houses may be co-ed but shared bedrooms will be single sex.

Those staying in bunkhouses must sign the Forest Service housing agreement. Alcohol is prohibited in Forest Service housing.
