Large Mammal Survey Intern (Local candidates preferred) (PO-00735102)

Spend your summer in Maryland, playing a vital role at Naval Air Station Patuxent River as a Large Mammal Survey Intern. You would perform crucial tasks in support of our mission.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct evening surveys for deer and coyote, 40%;
  • Conduct surveys for state-listed butterfly species, 35%;

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct habitat management for state-listed species, 15%;
  • Assist with bat acoustical surveys, 5%;
  • Assist with environmental education outreach, 5%.

Education Opportunities:
Training for all projects will be provided in-house.  Emergent educational opportunities would be granted as appropriate to the position and as the internship workload allows.

Local candidates are preferred due to lack of housing; however, non-local candidates will be considered if they can find their own housing. 

Ideal candidate has the ability to work with minimal supervision in areas with poisonous plants and animals, allergens, temperature extremes, and inclement weather, Minimum of 2 years of college in a related to wildlife management/biology, natural resources or other biological sciences; experience in habitat survey.

Schedule:
A Monday-Friday, 40 hour/week schedule is expected.  Some night and evening survey work will be required.
 
Compensation:

  • Weekly living allowance: $350*
  • One-time travel allowance: $1100*
  • Eligible for a 450-hour AmeriCorps education award worth $1,718.25*
