Invasive Plant Interns at Huron-Manistee National Forest
Invasive Plant Interns on the Huron-Manistee National Forest will work as a team and learn how to use a variety of books and keys to identify native and non-native plants. They will learn about appropriate techniques for treating 20+ species of invasive plants and earn State of Michigan Pesticide Applicator Certification in the Right-of-Way and Aquatic Pests categories. Interns will learn to use a variety of maps, GPS units, and GIS. Interns will also work with program areas other than Botany, such as Wildlife and Recreation as opportunities allow, and learn about botany surveys, Karner blue butterfly surveys, turtle surveys, Pitcher's thistle monitoring, etc.
Primary Duties include:
Controlling invasive plants (75%)
Maintaining native plant and pollinator gardens (5%)
Monitoring rare plant populations, conducting botanical surveys, assisting with other plant-related projects as necessary (5%)
Working with other program areas (5%)
Training Opportunities:
Interns will earn State of Michigan Pesticide Applicator Certification, US Forest Service certification in Boater Safety, First Aid, and CPR. They will receive training in plant identification, plant surveys, wildlife surveys, and herbicide application.
Compensation:
– $300/week Living Allowance*
– $1,100 Travel Allowance*, paid once with first paycheck
– Housing on-site
– Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,718.25, to be received upon successful completion of position
– Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority
*All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
