Interpretive Intern (PO-00735100)

Spend the summer exploring Wind Cave National Park, home to the seventh longest cave in the world.  This unique park located in the beautiful Black Hills of southwest South Dakota consists of 33,000 acres of mixed grass prairie and ponderosa pine ecosystems.  Bison, elk, prairie dogs and other associated wildlife overlie the most complex cave on earth. 

Primary Duties Include: 

  • Researching, developing and presenting several different thematic interpretive programs, including guided cave tours (55%)
  • Staffing the visitor center information desk (35%)
  • Assisting with resource management activities for either cave or surface-related resources (10%)

Compensation Details:
$250/week* Living Allowance
$650* Travel Allowance, paid once with first paycheck 
Housing on-site
– Eligible to apply hours toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority

*All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.*

Note:  This position is not eligible for the AmeriCorps education award.

Training Provided: Interns will receive extensive training on resource preservation and stewardship and will be the primary educator of visitors on resource stewardship issues.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Interns gain valuable insight into the diversity of career fields within the NPS and with positive performance results will create a pathway to paid employment with Wind Cave National Park the following year. Recreational opportunities are extensive.

All housing and associated cost is provided to the interns free of charge.  Housing consists of shared, furnished houses or apartments.  Basic furniture and major appliances are provided, while the selectee must provide linens, cookware, etc. All housing is located within the park and is within a ten minute walk to work.
