Interpretation and Education Intern

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Hours will include office, field, and classroom-based interpretation and education work. Tasks will include creation and production of written and/or print materials, such as site bulletins and website content; drafting of social media posts; interpreting the park’s cultural and natural resources for visitors through informal contacts and formal programming; development of lesson plans and other educational materials that meet Texas and national curriculum standards; creation and production of virtual programming; presentation of distance-learning and/or in-classroom education programs; and a variety of related visitor services tasks.

Hours will vary based on schedule.

Living allowance: $500.00 per week
One-time relocation travel allowance: $1,100.00

This position qualifies for an AmeriCorps Education Award.

It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

Training Provided: Member will participate in at least 40 hours of training: 1. Interpretation Topics (methods, etc.) 2. CPR & First Aid Training (when available) 3. NPS Safety Management & Hazardous Communication 4. UTV Safety and Operation Training

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: 1. May participate in the NPS Wellness Program (use of the fitness facilities at the park). 2. Fishing, birding, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing. 3.) May network with partner organizations and/or attend educational programs at park and partner sites.

Driving Logistics: Required

No public or commercial transportation from the Park to local amenities or intern housing. Morning and evening work shifts when dark, rainy or foggy can be unsafe to walk or ride a bike on unlit narrow highway.
