Chichagof Island is located 30 miles by air west of Juneau in Southeast Alaska, Interns will be living and working within a Tlingit village of 800 people. This is a temperate rainforest environment including cold lakes, bays, and streams. Weather in the summer can vary from sunny to raining with an average TEMP OF 50 DEGRESS F. Terrain is challenging with mountains through out the island. Hoonah also has one of the highest densities of brown bears in the world. You will be accompanied by armed forest service personal while in the field. Comfort around firearms is required.
Compensation:
- $1,500 – one time RT travel allowance
- $300 – weekly living allowance
- $200 – gear allowance
- $300 – 4 monthly housing allowances (paid out to member so that they can pay for their own USFS bunkhouse housing)
- AmeriCorps eligible

Training Provided: Interns will receive training in Forest Service survey protocols related to habitat assessments, fish sampling, share point monitoring, channel type identification, and more.
