GIS Intern:
Task 1: GIS Intern Major Duties:
SCA Intern works with and assists the Natural Resources Staff with maintaining and updating the GIS data for the Albeni Falls Dam project lands. This may include but is not limited to updating maps, creating new professional looking maps and layers based on field requests, organizing, and consolidating database files, using field collection equipment, and assisting with field data collection. The intern will frequently use the whole suite of ArcGIS tools including but not limited to: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Field Maps, and GPS equipment. The intern will work on a variety of projects relating to recreation, wildlife, real estate, cultural, and general operations. This is an excellent opportunity to get hands on GIS experience in a very diverse setting. This position will be a combination of sedentary office work using computers, and field work in rugged conditions. The intern must have a driver’s license and be capable of driving a USACE fleet vehicle. The intern also must be able to lead boundary clearing crews (ranging from teams of three to twelve members) to physically clear and delineate boundary lines and identify any potential encroachments and trespasses along the project’s 78 miles of boundaries.
Task 2: Skill and Knowledge
Applicant shall possess advanced knowledge of GIS principles, map manipulation, practices, procedures, and computer programs applicable to the position. They should also have the knowledge and ability to: understand complex technical terminology; use of field collection equipment, use of applications such as but not limited to ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Field Maps, etc.
The SCA intern shall have the ability to use considerable judgment to make sound determinations and proper decisions for handling or solving situations. The intern shall have excellent communication skills and techniques to make presentations and briefings, train, and advise. The intern must have the ability to draft and review plans, maps, layers, etc. They shall have the ability to lead field boundary clearing crews and possess the skills and abilities to assist Albeni Falls Dam project staff in the collection and analysis of data.
Task 3: Responsibility
Oral instructions for accomplishing and completing work assignments are given by supervisor or higher graded employee. Receives direct supervision for special assignments and specific time frames for accomplishment. Obtains assistance or uses appropriate equipment or safety devices when lifting and moving very heavy objects. The supervisor checks work on a random basis for timeliness, work practices, and compliance with instructions.
Member compensation:
- $300 weekly living allowance
- $40 weekly commuting allowance
- $1100 monthly housing allowance
- Optional monthly health insurance (12 months)
- NTE $650 to/from travel allowance**
- All-Weather Uniform package as described in statement of objective
- AmeriCorps Award valued at $6,495 at fulfillment of position requirements and 1700 service hours
*All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes
**Internship positions with the US Army Corps of Engineers will receive the travel allowance as a reimbursable amount, reflecting the actual costs based upon distance (mileage) travelled and current federal per diem rates. Interns are required to submit an expense report to SCA with documented round-trip travel costs for reimbursement. The requested reimbursement amount is capped at $650.
