Garden and Education intern (local applicants only) (PO-00735006)

City Green is seeking one, full-time, energetic, dynamic, and flexible SCA intern to support our Community Horticulture Department. Intern will work in both education and horticulture to provide both:   

1) "City Sprouts" after-school and summer camp garden education for children aged PreK – 12 years old. City Sprouts tasks will include driving City Green vehicles to satellite garden sites, following the City Sprouts curriculum to provide high quality garden programs, lesson preparation and clean-up, and working as a team with other educators or assistants.    

2) Garden maintenance in our perennial flower and vegetable gardens used for educational and community programming. Garden tasks will include watering, weeding, pruning, planting, mulching, and joining community volunteers for large garden projects.   

This is a physical, high-energy position, and interns will be asked to work both independently and in a team.   

Combining garden and educational experience, we hope SCA interns will get a holistic, hands-on experience at City Green, coming away from the program with both horticultural skills and valuable outdoor educational experience. City Green celebrates promoting access to beautiful green spaces in the community, locally grown vegetables, ecologically vibrant gardens, and experiential garden opportunities for the community.  

Qualifications:  

  • Interest and basic skills in vegetable gardening   

  • Interest and basic skills in perennial gardening   

  • High energy, flexibility, and a positive attitude     

  • Some experience working with youth 

  • Some experience with youth behavior management    

  • Willingness and ability to effectively lead a group in the garden    

  • Comfortable working outside in all weather and capable of lifting 40 pounds    

  •  Comfortable working with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)    

  •  Must be a team player and can work independently    

  •  Basic proficiency in Spanish preferred    

  •  A valid driver’s license    

  • Willingness to drive to garden sites in urban areas using company vehicles  

Allowances: 

  • $400/wk Living Allowance (pre-tax) 
  • $3,247 AmeriCorps Education Award (requires successful completion of full term of service/900 hours).  Intern MUST enroll in the AmeriCorps Ed Award Program.
