SCA's Conservation Corps Gap Year program in partnership with the Forest Preserves of Cook County is designed to provide conservation job training experience for young adults, ages 18-22. This 24 week program begins in June 2023 and runs through November 2023. Team members will gain vital workforce development skills and environmental education through hands-on service to the land. The Crew will work Monday through Thursday, 28 hours per week. Members will will be paid an hourly rate of $16.50 in the summer, with the opportunity to increase to $17.25 in the fall after obtaining certifications.
To gain leadership skills and experience, crew members will being their position serving as Apprentice Crew Leaders (ACLs) for the Chicago Conservation Leadership Corps program (CCLC). In late summer and fall, the crew will focus on burning brush piles, prairie burning, seed collection, invasive species removal, and other conservation projects as designated by the Forest Preserves of Cook County. The crew will also engage with the community by hosting alumni events.
During the 24 weeks, the corps team members will become certified in CPR/First Aid, receive their IL Herbicide License, and gain certifications in both chainsaw and prescribed burning. As with all SCA crews, SCA Community Core Curriculum will be utilized to introduce topics such as self-care; mental health; Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; conservation ethics; environmental justice; and more.
This crew will also participate in a one week camping/conservation work experience with the US Forest Service Urban Connections program, likely the week of August 13. Crew members are expected to attend this USFS Urban Connections Experience. Crew members should expect to be away for 4-6 nights out of state at a US National Forest (within driving distance). Camping equipment will be provided if the crew will be camping, as well as field based meals.
