Education and Visitor Services (PO-00735080)

Since the end of 2019, JFK NHS has been closed for renovations and needed maintenance.  The site is tentatively scheduled to reopen in July, and staff anticipate a year of high public visitation.  With this in mind, we are seeking an intern who is personable, dependable, comfortable working in a busy work environment with diverse audiences, and a team player.  The applicant selected for this internship will gain valuable experience in historic research, project planning, site programming and operations.

Specifically, the intern will have opportunities to conduct historical research essential for interpreting site significance; prepare interpretive tour outlines and publications based on primary and secondary source research;  facilitate tours, and conduct talks/programs of the historic Kennedy house and neighborhood; support curriculum-based programming; contribute regularly to the site’s social media platforms, create virtual experiences using ArcGIS StoryMaps, NPS App, and/or STQRY platforms; format digital publications for physical printing, and collaborate with NPS staff to develop, pilot and evaluate new programs and special events.

The intern will learn the basics of historic preservation and be involved in the protection of park resources.  The selected candidate will assist staff with the daily operations of the site, disseminate information to visitors and keep records of visitation statistics, and ring sales in the site’s gift shop.  The intern will work predominately onsite, but may be required to telework occasionally and attend nearby trainings and programs offsite.
The standard work schedule and expectation for this position is Wednesday-Sunday, 8:30am – 5:15pm.

The skills that are most needed include the ability to work independently, but also serve as a valuable team member, a working knowledge of MS Office, strong interpersonal and writing skills, strong ability to read/research/synthesize secondary and primary source materials, strong organizational skills, comfort with public speaking, and flexibility.
