Death Valley NP Planning Intern (PO-00735894)

Come join the SCA Flood Recovery Team at Death Valley National Park and get paid to thoroughly explore the Lower 48’s largest national park. In the late summer of 2022, flood waters ravished Death Valley’s usually dry landscape and caused extensive damage to its backcountry road network. This opportunity will directly impact the repair and future management of Death Valley’s recreation resources. The position will generally work an 4 day on 3 day off work schedule and will spend most of their time working on National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation. This position will provide an opportunity to experience the vast wilderness of Death Valley, while also giving them time to integrate into the Park Community.
 

  • conducting environmental analysis and review pertinent to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
  • Data entry to assure compliance with terms and conditions of land use authorizations
  • Preparation of other governmental agencies in accordance with established NPS guidelines and requirements
  • Analyze potential impacts to natural resources and design appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Communicating in a professional manner with the public
  • The selected individual is expected to effectively coordinate with project leads and resource specialists to complete tasks according to project priorities, timelines and expectations.

Work Breakdown:

  • Data processing and written reports (75%)
  • GIS data collection throughout Death Valley National Park (15%)
  • Other duties as assigned (10%)

Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age and no older than 30 years of age by position start date
  • Veterans may be 35 by position start date
  • Have a background in natural resource management, environmental policy, botany, rangeland management, geology, biology, ecology, or a related field
  • Ability to work independently and think on your feet
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and be able to work well with others in a professional setting
  • Have a proficiency in Microsoft Office suite products such as Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Commitment to service in working conditions that will include extreme temperatures, high winds, precipitation, and remote locations
  • Ability to pass an NPS background check
  • Preferred qualifications include being familiar with GIS and having a general understanding of federal land resource management policies

Housing
Housing will be furnished by the NPS in Death Valley. The closet town with services is Pahrump, NV, which is perfectly situated half way between Death Valley and Las Vegas. It provides access to ample outdoor recreation pursuits, as well as, all of the convinces of modern life.
