Cultural Resources Intern (PO-00735790)

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Padre Island National Seashore is a national park that includes about 66 miles of undeveloped beaches and natural habitat. The national seashore is located on [North] Padre Island near the city of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Intern duties will include office, field, and backcountry cultural resource management work. Tasks will include: surveying archeological sites disturbed by illegal activities; cleaning, cataloging, and housing artifacts; restoration of historic landscapes; researching the historical context of material culture; developing museum exhibits; data entry; data analysis, report writing, and presentation of project findings; and a variety of related resource management tasks.

Hours:
Hours will vary based on schedule. Work will generally be Monday through Friday, 8:00 – 4:30.

Living allowance: $500.00 per week
One-time relocation travel allowance: $1,100.00
Housing provided.

This position qualifies for an AmeriCorps Education Award.

It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: 1. May participate in the NPS Wellness Program (use of the fitness facilities at the park). 2. Fishing, birding, swimming, kayaking, wind surfing. 3.) May network with partner museums and/or attend educational programs at park and partner sites.

No public or commercial transportation from the Park to local amenities or intern housing. Morning and evening work shifts when dark, rainy or foggy can be unsafe to walk or ride a bike on unlit narrow highway.
