Stones River National Battlefield (STRI) has made great strides in engaging the African American community, but park staff recognize that opportunity for continued growth remains. STRI enjoys a thriving partnership with the African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County (AAHSRC). Since 2013, we have worked with that partner to present an array of stakeholder produced programming focused on the African American experience on the park’s landscapes. This internship will build on that relationship and work to enhance existing audience centered programs to engage a larger audience. The intern will foster programming developed by members of the African American community with the expectation that it will more effectively interest members of the community to participate.
The intern will assist in the development curriculum-based outreach programs specifically designed to engage area students in learning about the African American experience on a local, state and national level. The intern will work closely with the AAHSRC to identify and cultivate additional partner organizations and plan/present interpretive programs and events. The intern will work with partners to enhance self-guiding interpretation of sites in and around STRI connected to the African American experience using technology such as a tour app. The intern will also assist in planning and managing volunteer service opportunities that engage members of the African American community.
