Cave Cultural Resource Management Internship (PO-00735280)

This project is focused on the preservation of cultural resources within Mammoth Cave National Park (MACA). The SCA intern will work directly under the Cultural Resources Program Manager in completing cultural resource field surveys, working with external partners, and collaborating with volunteers to manage sensitive cultural resources.

The intern will participate in archeological monitoring within a cave environment by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts. Work will include observing cave trail construction activity. Pedestrian work crews will be present, and the monitor will follow site safety and communication protocols. Records data and prepares survey records (e.g., site maps, photographs, surface artifact analysis forms, field notes, etc.). Provides information to Science and Resource Management staff by synthesizing clear and concise documentation and correspondence and monitoring the status of any resources of concern. Serves as a cultural resource intern potential excavation and survey activities that may arise.Participates in artifact recovery and provenience determination, if needed. 

Laboratory work includes production of field catalogs and inventories of archaeological data, washing and sorting artifacts, analyzing artifacts, and field data, producing maps and drawings, database entry, and cataloging.

The SCA intern will receive training in field surveys and obtain a broad experience in managing resources in a National Park setting. The SCA intern will also assist the Cultural Resources Manager and Chief of Science and Resource Management in other related cultural resource management efforts, providing a broad learning experience. This position will receive in field training to further prepare the individual for a career in the management of cultural resources.

Applicants for this position should possess an undergraduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related cultural resources degree and/or experience. 

Compensation Details:

  • $1,100 one-time travel allowance (personal vehicle is required)
  • $500 / week living allowance
  • Housing included at the park
  • Eligible for an AmeriCorps Education award valued at $1,718.25, upon successful completion of the program.

Training Provided: Training and mentoring objectives include providing opportunities to interns to gain hands-on training experience in field surveys and obtain a broad experience in managing resources in a National Park setting.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: A wide variety of recreational opportunities are available in the park including, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, camping, bicycling. SCA members may also receive the opportunity to participate in monthly Cave Research Foundation expeditions.

Park housing is within walking or biking distance to office. Intern will drive or ride in government owned vehicle to field locations.

The park has various housing units available. Assignments will be made at time of intern selection. 

All housing units options will be shared with 1-2 roommates in either a house or apartment style complex.  Each unit will have a full kitchen, utility area, dining area, living room, and shared laundry facilities in a centralized location.  Further details will be provided to applicants during the interview process based on availability at that time.

Interns will be expected to furnish their own bedding items (sheets, blankets, pillows). Cleaning solutions (kitchen/bathroom soap/shampoo, mop solution, dish/laundry detergent). Kitchen and bathroom towels.  Each unit has major appliances: stove, microwave, full-sized refrigerator, coffee maker, and toaster. Dinnerware and cutlery are provided along with standard sized pots and pans.
