Botany Internship (PO-00735618)

This position will aid the park Botany program in monitoring and restoring disturbed sites within Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.  The intern will assist the park Botanist with invasive plant management, landscape restoration, nursery management and ecological monitoring,  The intern will assist with mapping non-native plant locations and use hand tools to remove non-native plants; mapping off-road vehicle track disturbance and use hand tools to remove off-road vehicle tracks; caring for plants in the park nursery and out-planting nursery grown plants; sampling vegetation plots, recording field data on standard forms, entering data and performing quality checks on data.  The intern will have the opportunity for on-the-job training in the management of public lands and natural resources.

Compensation amounts:

  • $500 – weekly living allowance
  • $1,100- round trip travel allowance
  • On-site housing included
  • $3,447- AmeriCorps Education Award eligible

Training Provided: Use of Global Positioning System (GPS) units; common plant species of the Sonoran Desert; use of a dichotomous key; invasive plant management techniques; landscape restoration techniques; plant propagation techniques; vegetation sampling techniques.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Educational opportunities will include on the job training in natural resource management and the flora and ecology of the Sonoran Desert. Recreational opportunities will include hiking and mountain biking within the Monument.

Housing will be a private bedroom in a house shared by other interns or temporary park employees.  Houses will be shared with between 1 and 3 individuals.  Houses include full kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities.
