This position will serve as a Biological Science Intern. You will provide biological and technical support for protocol development, field surveys, and data management needs pertaining to the collection of inventory and monitoring information on Department of Interior lands. Field work will mainly occur on Bureau of Land Management’s Roswell/Carlsbad BLM Field Offices areas, and on Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Limited travel may be required. Data collection will span a variety of taxa and habitat types. You will also work closely with the New Mexico Ecological Services staff at Roswell/Carlsbad BLM Field Offices and Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge assisting with refuge management activities. You will be supervised by a senior FWS biologist at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge.
Compensation amounts:
- $1,100 – one time RT travel allowance
- $400 – weekly living allowance
- $2,000 – duty related travel/gear allowances and education and training tuition
- AmeriCorps eligible ($3,172 education award)

Training Provided: The selected candidate will be required to take several training courses related to the use of Dept. of Interior computers. The candidate will be encouraged to take multiple, self-paced on-line GIS courses. Other training opportunities are possible.
Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Several outdoor activities are available nearby such as hiking, biking, camping. Attractions include activities in Ruidoso, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, White Sands NP, Lincoln National Forest, Bottomless Lakes State Park.

The distance from the refuge housing to the City of Roswell is about 9 miles. The member will not be allowed to use government owned vehicles to make trips into Roswell to buy groceries, to shop, or for other personal activities.

Housing may be one of several trailers/bunkhouses available to temporary researches and other USFWS staff requiring lodging for short-term stays at the refuge; this housing has private rooms but the facility (kitchen, bathrooms) may be shared.
