Bilingual Water Safety Intern (Fluent in Spanish) (PO-00733977)

INTERN IS REQUIRED TO BE FLUENT IN SPANISH.

Intern leads informal interpretation to educate the public about Water Safety and Leave No Trace. In the past ten years Gateway NRA has had more than 20 visitor related drowning park–wide, however the program over the past five years has helped to reduce that number to zero on the bay beaches in the park.  Interns educate visitors in both English and Spanish about the dangers of swimming in non-guarded beaches and how to recognize characteristics of water depth, changes in currents & tides, and man-made hazards in the water.  Interns will provide instruction to visitors about what to do when encountering danger in the water and how to get help. Interns promote and educate the public about Water Safety and Leave No Trace through photos and videos to be posted on park social media forums and the park website. The intern will assist the park rangers with all water-based programs and events, such as canoeing, seining, Junior Ranger Lifeguard, Latino Conservation Weekend and World Oceans Day. The park intern is responsible for documenting visitor contacts daily and provide a season-end program report to the supervisor.  This position is supervised by the Division of Interpretation and the Park Unit Manager.

EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Because of Sandy Hook's proximity to New York City and the Jersey Shore you will have a variety of opportunities to take advantage of each areas vast recreational and cultural experiences. Beyond working in the Sandy Hook Unit you will also get to evaluate how the message you are providing can be used in the other two units of the park by assisting with developing the next phase of the program.

Compensation Details (pre-tax): 

  • Weekly living allowance: $350/week
  • Travel Grant: $650
  • AmeriCorps Education Award: $1,718 (based upon successful completion of the position).
