Applications needed for two field ranger assistants to fill position at two heavily used day use areas in Mt. Rainier National Park, Tipsoo and Sunrise. Each area needs an assistant ranger presence to assure that fragile alpine resources are protected and that the public is provided education about the sensitivity of these alpine areas. This position will be responsible for managing large parking facilities, trail patrol, providing visitor resource education and providing current trail conditions. The interns may conduct joint patrols into the wilderness to camp and assist rangers with checking permits for the thousands of campers on the trail. The interns will assist the rangers in education of the visitors on the Wilderness Act, Leave No Trace principles and NPS regulations. EMT training background and/or WFR certification desired.
Compensation amounts:
– $650- one time RT travel allowance
– $250 – weekly living allowance
– Housing on site provided
– AmeriCorps eligible ($1,718 education award)

Training Provided: Applicants will be provided a variety of training opportunities to include: SAR response, Operational Leadership (risk analysis), Defensive driving, Wilderness patrol functions and orientation to the East District of Mount Rainier.
Educational/Recreational Opportunities: The overall objective is to have these applicants work with ranger staff on a day to day patrol function and provide protection of these fragile alpine areas. Applicants will have access to hiking in one of the Pacific Northwests best alpine locations.
