2022 Pacific Crest Trail Skilled Team # 3 – Southern California Trail Crew (PO-00732247)

The Pacific Crest Trail is a 2,653 mile long National Scene Trail along mountain ridges that spans from the Canadian to the Mexican borders.  SCA is partnering with the Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA) on a variety of trail projects that are aimed at addressing a backlog of maintenance issues on the trail.  These backcountry crews will be living and working in remote sections of the trail in southern California.  Projects may include clearing downed logs, tread and drainage work, rock work, and clearing debris off the trail to make it safe for users.    

Field-life is rugged, and while on work hitches, members should expect to live without electricity, running water, and cell phone reception; additionally, while on hitch, this crew is alcohol and substance free.  

Project Background
Located in the Palamar District of the Cleveland National Forest, this SCA crew will working on a frontcoutry trail that is severely overgrown and hasn't been worked on in years.  The crew will work with PCTA to clear the trail and address any tread and drainage issues they can.

Crew Living Accommodations  
For the duration of the season, crews should expect to be camping in front country and backcountry scenarios for the entirety of the crew.  Members should plan to be mobile and expect to be traveling long distances in remote locations to get to their project sites. Members will be expected to work together to ensure that all SCA equipment, vehicles, trailer, and tools are properly maintained and ready for use in the field.  Personal vehicles are not recommended for this project.  Crew members will have access to an SCA vehicle for transportation to and from work projects.   
  

Member Responsibilities

  • Ensure project, crew community, basecamp, vehicles, and general safety standards are upheld; full engagement is expected in all work projects and community activities. 
  • Interfacing with general public and partner organizations in a manner that reflects positively upon the crew, organization, and agency. 
  • Recording work totals and creating reports for submission to agency partners; this will include, taking photos, GPS field data collection, and post-processing. 

Member Qualifications

  • Commitment to living and working within an intensive crew environment; interpersonal skills and community living experience are pluses. 
  • Commitment to service in working conditions that will include: extreme heat, extreme cold, high winds, and precipitation. 
  • Ability to pass SCA background check. 
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to pass Motor Vehicle Records check preferred 

Member Benefits:
– $650 – one time round trip travel allowance
– $280 – weekly living allowance
– $200 – uniform reimbursement

****Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.
