Drones flying overhead, youth tweeting to the world, Go Pro’s readied for action. Doesn’t sound like something you would see during an outdoor service project, does it? At Exelon’s first ever National Volunteer week, that was exactly what we saw. During the month of April, SCA & Exelon teamed up to restore green spaces across the nation in Baltimore, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Houston.

Two Philadelphia crew members were chosen to be given the opportunity to join a SCA National Crew this summer after completing the Greater Philadelphia CLC program. These members joined other high school students on crews working in National Parks and federal lands across the country. The students were provided with travel scholarship, camping gear and predominately worked on trial building or maintenance projects for periods lasting 15 to 35 days.

The 2012 SCA Greater Philadelphia Summer Program successfully completed its fourth year, with Philadelphia and Camden area youth completing meaningful summer service projects while gaining leadership and Job Readiness skills.

More than 250 underserved teens in Chicago and Philadelphia have secured green jobs and leadership opportunities – providing conservation skills, environmental education and career training – through a grant from the Exelon Foundation to the Student Conservation Association (SCA). The $150,000 grant builds on a partnership launched last year in support of SCA’s innovative urban conservation programs.
