On August 23rd, SCA teamed up with national supporter Domtar to refurbish a community skating rink and playground in Nekoosa, Wisconsin. Since 2012, Domtar has supported SCA’s urban initiatives for youth in cities across the country. SCA crew leaders from New York City, just finished with a season of fieldwork helping urban parks recover from Hurricane Sandy, were excited to travel to Wisconsin to help facilitate the project — and share stories of their work with urban youth.

NEKOOSA – City youths will have a nicer place to play after Domtar employees joined forces with the Student Conservation Association to improve the skating rink’s warming house and nearby playground.

Domtar has been supporting the SCA since 2012, said Heather Stowe, Domtar’s sustainability manager. In return for Domtar’s support, SCA members help with company projects.

Working outdoors was an easy sell for Zimmerman, but she says being a part of the Student Conservation Association has pushed her to do more, like being a leader and taking on responsibility.

“I kind of feel like I’ve gone from being a younger girl to being a lady,” says Zimmerman. “It’s amazing what I’m learning from these people and it makes me think, ‘Man, when I’m their age I want to be able to have done the things they’ve done.’ So I’m super excited to see where my career is going to go within the next few years…”
