Maryland Veteran Conservation Corps- Project Leader

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire four veteran members for the Maryland Veteran Corps at Point Lookout Complex.

Program Dates: 6/3/2019 – June 2020

Training Dates: May (exact dates TBD) - mandatory paid training

Primary Responsibilities:

The Maryland Veteran Corps will consist of 1 Leader and 4 Members and will serve in all five parks in the Point Lookout Complex (includes Point Lookout, Greenwell, Newtowne Neck, St. Clement’s Island, and St. Mary’s River - all in St. Mary’s County), as well as other nearby state parks. The duration of this corps will be 52 weeks and will give corps members the workskills needed to enter into the conservation workforce. Corps projects may include carpentry, trail construction and maintenance, landscaping, and site restoration (including seed planting, botany inventories, limb pruning, and invasive species removal). Projects will be completed in partnership with the Maryland Conservation Corps and may involve travel.

Work-skills training for members is provided through Maryland Forest Service through the Maryland Conservation Corps. Training may include chainsaw, emergency medical responder, introduction to search and rescue, small craft safety, interpretive skills. Other training opportunities are available through Maryland Park Service and will be identified once program begins. Additional training in trail maintenance, minor construction, and park specific skills are provided on site in a hands-on setting. 

Specifically, the Crew Leader will:

  • Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, managing crew housing, and guiding crew dynamics
  • Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship
  • Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
  • Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with young adults (18 or older), teaching or environmental education a plus
  • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills– i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
  • Current chainsaw certification preferred
  • Experience or interest in working with post-9/11-era US Military Veterans
  • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and most occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
  • Current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification (Wilderness First Responder preferred)
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Must have ability to legally work in the US
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards
  • Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
  • Must be a Veteran located in the Maryland area (no housing is provided)

Compensation: $700/week total salary, with paid leadership and work-skills training, plus travel allowance; benefits eligible (health, dental, vision, retirement, PTO, paid holidays).
