Primary Responsibilities: 

SCA, America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire young adults in conservation service projects across Idaho for the 2023 field season.  

Created in 2009, the SCA Idaho AmeriCorps Residential Program is designed to meet the environmental conservation, natural resource protection, community stewardship, and workforce development needs of public land managers in Idaho and the surrounding communities.  22 corps members and staff are housed at the Indianola Ranger Station, located in North Fork ID, and spend each week working on public land management projects in crews of 5-6 people.  In 2023, crews will spend significant amounts of time in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.  Backcountry trail maintenance in remote locations with outfitter re-supply will comprise at least 2/3 of the field season.  Other projects in 2023 include historic preservation, fuels reduction, developed recreation management, and habitat surveys.     

Project Leaders assist with SCA member orientation, training of corps members in conservation work skills, and completion of service projects on public land throughout Idaho.  Project Leaders are the primary field supervisors for SCA crews of 4-5 members.  They are responsible for ensuring the safe, complete and accurate execution of work projects in partnership with a variety of public land management agencies.   This position reports to the Program Coordinator. 



Specifically, the Crew Leader will: 

  • As an SCA Project Leader you will serve as a teacher, supervisor, and role model for your crew. Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, tools, equipment, and vehicles for backcountry and frontcountry hitches lasting 8 – 10 days.  Hitches in the Frank Church Wilderness may require extended backcountry living, up to 6 weeks at a time. 

  • Actively manage group dynamics and corps members’ well-being in remote environments.    

  • Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment.  

  • Promote leadership development within the team and evaluate success and potential.  

  • Ensure successful and timely completion of conservation service projects on public land.  

  • Act as a Crew Supervisor,by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics 

  • Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship  

  • Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA 

  • Perform tasks as a Program Administrator,by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff 


Leader Qualifications: 

  • Experience working with youth or young adults 18-25, teaching or environmental education a plus 

  • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred – i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening 

  • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age 

  • Must have the ability to legally work in the US 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards 

  • Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards

Leader Benefits and Compensation: 

  • $800 weekly stipend 

  • $550___ travel stipend 

  • Housing: SCA Idaho AmeriCorps is based at the historic Indianola Ranger Station in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. The living conditions are simple, rustic, and community focused. Along with the 1913 Ranger Station where the main office is located, there are several bunkhouses, a community house, shower house, and several storage buildings on site for tools and equipment. The facility is off grid with no cell phone service and limited satellite internet connectivity. Members will live in the rustic bunkhouses or in furnished wall-tents. Situated on the Wild and Scenic Salmon River, there are ample opportunities for recreation, and travel to nearby towns for goods is a 45-minute drive. A significant amount of time will be spent camping during the work hitches.  Members can expect periods of up to 6 weeks in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and camping in front-country locations throughout the season.

  • Rigging – $550 

  • Chainsaw level B – $500 

  • First Aid recertification – $300

Conditions of Employment: 

Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA program participants are required to provide proof of up-to-date vaccination against COVID-19. Per CDC guidance, up-to-date vaccination now includes all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when indicated. For example, if someone has completed the primary series but is not yet indicated for a booster shot, they are considered up to date. Once a person is indicated for a booster (6 months after Pfizer or Moderna primary series, 2 months after J&J primary series), full and up-to-date vaccination includes the completed booster shot.
