Timberland & SCA Transform Carver Middle School Garden in Los Angeles, CA

Timberland and the Student Conservation Association (SCA) have partnered with Root Down LA to transform Dr. George Washington Carver Middle School’s Garden on December 16, 2019!

Root Down LA is a non-profit dedicated to nutrition education and youth development. Over the last 10 years they have used their unique demand-and-supply model to convince thousands of people in South L.A. and beyond that they want to eait their veggies! Root Down continues to put youth at the forefront of their engaging programs, strategically located veggie gardens, and micro-businesses building resillient neighborhood food systems.

Dr. George Washington Carver Middle School embodies the rich diversity of its South Los Angeles neighborhood. Their current enrollment of 760 students reflects the profound shift of the neighborhood composition from a historically African American community to a mostly Latino community. Carver Middle School is identified as high needs, and this event aims to provide the school community with a transformed garden space for educational programming.


WHEN: Monday, December 16th, 8:30am to 3:00pm. Registration beginning at 8:30am with welcome remarks at 9:00am. Lunch at 12:00pm.

WHERE: George Washington Carver Middle School, 4410 McKinley Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90011.

WHAT: Volunteers will transform the school garden with projects including the installation of a tool shed, compost system, and picnic tables, as well as the general beautification of the garden’s open areas and walkways.

BRING WITH YOU: Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Water coolers will be available, but please bring your own reusable water bottles to fill up at the cooling stations. The event will take place rain or shine so please dress for the weather!

PROVIDED: All project supplies (tools, gloves, etc.), breakfast, and lunch are provided.
