Join the Student Conservation Association as we team up with NYC Parks and AmeriCorps to celebrate MLK Day through service at East River Park in Manhattan.
East River Park encompasses 57 acres of waterfront on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. During Hurricane Sandy, the park was inundated with over six feet of storm surge. Beyond the immediate damages, the storm left a lasting impact in the form of salt contamination.
High levels of salt and other contaminants caused the loss of over 100 trees in the park and continue to stress root systems. SCA volunteers will spread mulch and topsoil throughout the park to help improve the soil and make way for healthy spring plantings.
WHEN: Saturday, January 17th, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm
WHERE: East River Park, East 6th Street & FDR Drive, New York, NY 10009. (Cross the FDR via the 6th Street Footbridge and meet in front of the Field House.)
WHAT: Volunteers will help to mitigate salt contamination by spreading new mulch and topsoil to make way for healthy spring plantings.
BRING WITH YOU: Wear long pants and sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring extra layers as the event will take place in any weather!
