Join SCA to commemorate the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance on Governors Island.
With support from American Express, SCA will work with the Trust for Governors Island, the Friends of Governors Island, and the Billion Oyster Project to bring community members together to improve this unique island park space, located in New York Harbor less than a mile from the tip of Manhattan and One World Trade Center.
Free lunch and t-shirts will be provided for all volunteers!
WHEN: Monday, September 11th, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (lunch following)
WHERE: Meet at the Manhattan Governors Island Ferry Terminal at 10 South Street (just north of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal). Recommended arrival time is 8:30am-8:45am to catch the 9:00am volunteer ferry.
***Ferry departs at 9:00am sharp. Volunteers arriving late will need to wait for the next ferry at 9:30am.***
WHAT:
— Build oyster cages to rehabilitate New York Harbor’s native oysters
— Create a new rain garden on the island’s urban farm
— Resurface a natural woodchip trail on Discovery Hill
— Remove invasive species threatening some of the most beautiful sections of the island including The Hills and the Hammock Grove!
BRING WITH YOU: Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and bring a reusable water bottle. The event will take place rain or shine so please dress for the weather!
PROVIDED: SCA will provide morning snacks and lunch for all volunteers, as well as work gloves and ConSERVE NYC t-shirts.
