SCA Alumni Veterans Day Tour of Governors Island in New York City

Wednesday, November 11, 2015 - November 11, 2015 9:00 am

Celebrate Veterans Day by joining fellow SCA alumni for a VIP off-season tour of Governors Island and the military history of New York Harbor.

Learn about the fortifications that guarded New York during the War of 1812 and the military families who lived on site. Get a sneak peek of The Hills, the new section of the island that will open to the public in Summer 2016. And help erect new greenhouses where seedlings for next season will be grown. Then enjoy pizza with fellow alumni!

Thanks to the Trust for Governors Island and the Governors Island Alliance for providing this special opportunity for our alumni!

WHEN: WEDNESDAY, November 11th (NYC School Holiday), 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: Meet at the Governors Island Ferry Terminal at 10 South Street (just north of the Staten Island Ferry) by 8:45am to catch the 9:00am ferry.

Public ferries are no longer running to Governors Island; special ferries for participants will depart for Governors Island at 9:00am and return to Manhattan at 2:30pm. If you will need to arrive later or depart earlier, please contact Ann Pedtke to make arrangements.

WHAT: Behind-the-scenes tour of Governors Island and hands-on service building new greenhouses in the urban farm.

WHO: Alums who have served with SCA as interns, corps members, crew members, crew leaders, staff, or volunteers in New York or elsewhere across the country! Current members, partners, and supporters also welcome.

BRING WITH YOU: Please bring a reusable water bottle and dress for the weather. SCA will provide a free pizza lunch for participants, as well as work gloves and hard hats for the tour of The Hills construction site.

RSVP: Please sign up to join us at http://SCAAlumniVetsDayNYC.eventbrite.com.

QUESTIONS: Contact Ann Pedtke at [email protected] or 724-678-9401.

DIRECTIONS:

BY PUBLIC TRANSIT: The Manhattan Governors Island Ferry Terminal is easily accessible by subway. Take the 4/5 to Bowling Green, the R to Whitehall Street, or the 1 to South Ferry Loop, then walk approximately 5 minutes south to the ferry terminal.

BY CAR: We recommend taking public transportation to this event, as parking is difficult to find in southern Manhattan. There is no designated parking available at the ferry terminal, and no private vehicles are allowed on the island. Participants coming by private vehicle will need to find parking nearby in lower Manhattan and walk to the ferry terminal.
