People have been drawn to the rugged coast of Maine throughout history. Awed by its beauty and diversity, early 20th century visionaries donated the land that became Acadia National Park.
Here you will find granite cliffs side by side with sand and cobblestone beaches and glacier-carved mountains rising from the sea with cupping deep lakes in their valleys. The geography of Acadia National Park ranges from meadows and marshes to dense evergreen forests. Birding is excellent with over 273 species of birds identified on Mount Desert Island and adjacent waters. The ocean’s presence is everywhere, whether by sight, sound or smell, and the park is home to the tallest mountain on the U.S. Atlantic coast.
This week-long work trip (July 17-24) is open to SCA alumni, and their friends and family, with a minimum age of 18 and no upper limit. No previous trailwork expereince is necessary, but a certain level of physical fitness is expected from participants.
This will be a front-country based crew working on various trail projects in the park: replacing bog bridges, building retaining walls, and addressing various tread and drainage issues.
You will be tent camping at Seawall Campground about 4 miles south of Southwest Harbor and have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful Maine coast and all the park has to offer. SCA will provide group camping gear such as tents, cooking gear, food, etc. The 8 person crew will be led by two experienced SCA crew leaders, who will have spent the previous month leading a high school crew in another part of the Park.
The cost is $675, and includes group camping gear such as tents, cooking gear, food, etc.
Be prepared to be fully participatory, both in the work for each day and the work around camp, including sharing cooking and cleaning responsibilities. Comfort with tent camping is a must. If you have past medical issues at elevation, high blood pressure, heart problems, and/or shortness of breath when walking less than 2 miles, or have never backpacked in a mountain environment please consider carefully your participation in this program. Your safety is our number 1 priority.
Should you have to cancel, we will be able to refund 75% of your registration fee if you cancel by June 25, but none of your fee if you cancel afterwards.
