Union Bank & SCA Give Back in San Diego
On Saturday, February 9th, Union Bank, SCA, and City of San Diego Parks and Recreation united to help with the upkeep of Chicano Park and Paradise Senior Center. Seventy participants teamed up to pick up litter from 2.5 acres of park land and restore over 5,000 square feet of green space including mulching more than 2,500 square feet, painting nearly 20 structures, planting 12 succulents, and installing 50 pavers. Joined by Barrio Logan College Institute Upward Bound program, Union Bank volunteers preserved this intrinsic part of the San Diego community.
To kick off the day, SCA Project Leaders including SCA alums Igor DaCruz, Sandra Hamilton, and Sara Wanous, along with other local alumni and SCA staff, led a team builder and project orientation. In the garden space, participants began by creating a layout alongside the dedicated seniors of the center. Union Bank employee volunteers worked hard to install pavers, plant succulents, and apply fresh mulch, while other participants painted walls and patio furtniture. This renewed green space will be enjoyed by the seniors who help to care for the Paradise Senior Center.
On the other side of the center, youth volunteers from Barrio Logan College Institute plowed their way through two mulch piles to renew the front landscape. These high schoolers showed their strong work ethic, pushing through the rain to mulch over 2,500 square feet!
Just South of the center in Chicano Park, a third group helped to preserve this green space by picking up litter from more than 100,000 square feet of park land. These Union Bank employee volunteers also worked to prepare the stairs of a Chicano Park stage for painting later on this year, a high need project for the park.
These all-star participants ended their day with lunch from Nectarine Grove. With over 2.5 acres of green space preserved, these 70 participants had worked up a much deserved appetite. Whether it’s youth playing at the basketball courts or seniors working in their garden, Chicano Park provides the surrounding community with a green reprieve from bustling city life. Giving back to their parks with volunteer efforts like this one is an integral part of the Union Bank family.
