Ten young Norwalkers improve trail at Cranbury Park as part of summer jobs program

NORWALK — A large rock several feet across sits aside what will become a handicapped-accessible trail connecting the Great Lawn and south part of Cranbury Park.

Young Norwalkers, employed as part of the city’s 2012 Youth Summer Jobs Program and working under the guidance of the Student Conservation Association, used hazel hoes and other hand tools to leverage the rock out of the center of the trail.

“It looked like an impossible task but with us four, ‘The Rock Boys’ doing it together, we finally got it out,” says Justin Burke, a Norwalk High School student and Summer Jobs Program participant. SCA crew leaders “helped us with different strategies to get it out of the hole and then push it to the side. It probably weighed at least 150 or 200 pounds.”

Jacob Feldheim, another NHS student and Summer Jobs Program participant, disagrees on the weight of the rock.

“Five hundred pounds. It was huge. It took five guys,” Feldheim says. …continue reading
