(ARLINGTON, VA) June 11 – The Student Conservation Association (SCA), the national leader in youth service and conservation, has named W. David Mallery as senior vice president of programs. Mallery will oversee a range of transformative service-learning experiences that engage thousands of teens and young adults each year in protecting America’s national, state, and municipal public lands.
Mallery has held leadership positions with outdoor, youth, and volunteer organizations for over 35 years. Most recently, he was executive director of the Bluff Lake Nature Center, Denver’s largest wildlife refuge managed as native habitat, and Denver’s only nonprofit nature center operated as an outdoor classroom. In this role, he also earned a gubernatorial appointment to the Colorado Governor’s Commission on Community Service. Prior to that, Mallery led the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service for nearly a decade. Additionally, he has served in other nonprofit management roles, as a private contractor, and as a park ranger.
The life-altering programs that have propelled SCA to the front of the youth conservation movement have been expanding to new locations and engaging new participants. “David’s stellar record in developing innovative nature-based programs, activating young volunteers, managing multi-million dollar budgets, and collaborating with the public and private sector make David the ideal choice to lead this continued growth. David is an accomplished leader who brings a remarkable depth and diversity of experience, and we are delighted to welcome him,” said SCA President and CEO Jaime Berman Matyas.
While co-chair of Voices for National Service and Public Policy Chair for America’s Service Commissions, Mallery helped win more than $100M in funding for federal service initiatives. He holds a master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Communication from Mississippi State University.
