Charlestown, NH (Vocus) — The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national leader in youth service and stewardship, has announced a partnership with ARAMARK, a world leader in professional services. During the week of April 17-24, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, ARAMARK employees will join SCA volunteers in conservation service projects in Boston, Chicago, and seven other cities nationwide. ARAMARK’s sponsorship enables SCA to expand its engagement of diverse high school and college-age individuals in conservation internships and job preparedness programs in more than 500 national parks, forests and communities across the country. SCA members perform crucial tasks that otherwise would not be accomplished, and the majority of SCA alumni leverage their experience to launch productive green careers and serve in their communities. “By joining forces with SCA volunteers, ARAMARK employees are further demonstrating our commitment to enhance the environment and communities where we live and work,” says Chris Stemen, Senior Director, Sustainability, ARAMARK Higher Education. “SCA’s service projects are a natural extension from our day-to-day operational commitment to environmental stewardship.”

The SCA-ARAMARK Earth Day project in Boston will take place in Allandale Woods, the city’s second largest unfragmented woodland area. Volunteers will get hands-on environmental education while removing non-native invasive vegetation and assisting with the general clean up of the park. In Chicago, four designated empty lots will be turned into community green spaces. Projects include planting native seeds, painting murals, building raised beds, removing trash and building composting bins. Earth Day activities in natural resource areas, including urban parks and green spaces, are also planned for Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Oakland, CA, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Washington, DC.

ARAMARK, a service provider to hundreds of national parks and college campuses throughout the U.S., is an ideal partner for SCA, says President Dale Penny. “ARAMARK’s commitment to preserving our natural treasures and promoting the health and well being of our student population is to be commended,” Penny notes. “Their generous financial support, coupled with the local efforts of staff volunteers, is a clear demonstration of ARAMARK’s commitment.”
