(WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 25, 2011) – The Student Conservation Association (SCA), the national leader in youth service and stewardship, today endorsed President Obama’s nomination of Wendy Spencer to serve as Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) as an excellent choice at an extraordinary time.
Across our country, millions of our fellow citizens find themselves relying on national service providers in a struggle with high unemployment, rising fuel and food prices, and other painful aspects of our ongoing economic turmoil.
At the same time, CNCS faces the threat of severe budget cuts as federal lawmakers seek to reduce Washington spending.
National service, and strong leadership at the Corporation for National and Community Service, is needed now more than ever, and Wendy Spencer has the skills and integrity needed to navigate CNCS through this challenging period and beyond. With three decades of executive experience in the nonprofit and volunteer sectors, Ms. Spencer offers an unparalleled record of achievement at the national and state levels, including her term on President George W. Bush’s Council on Service and Civic Participation and three separate appointments to lead Volunteer Florida, a gubernatorial commission on volunteerism and service.
The Student Conservation Association strongly endorses the selection of Wendy Spencer to lead CNCS and we look forward to her speedy approval and to working with her to secure a brighter future for America and for those who need a helping hand.
