SCA Spring Cleaning at Kirkwood Park with Domtar

It seems like the entire country had a long winter.  The ripple effects took a toll on more than our moods; our parks needed a whole lot of work to recover and prepare for summer.

SCA and more than 100 Domtar HDIS employees and family members tackled that need in amazing fashion.  On a sunny and humid Saturday, May 12th, volunteers contributed over 309 hours of service to revitalize Kirkwood Park.

Volunteers, young and old, rolled up their sleeves and removed over 1840 square feet of invasive, overgrown honeysuckle.  They improved 4,225 square feet of a community garden, including weeding and mulching.  And they restored almost half a mile of mulch trail in 90-degree weather.  Volunteers spread more than 99 cubic years of mulch and removed 64 gallons of weeds.

Kylie Christanell and the team at Kirkwood Park were extremely impressed with the amount of work this dedicated group of volunteers accomplished.

“It was remarkable to see how engaged families were with the park conservation efforts,” Dan McCabe, Vice President, SCA.  “The HDIS employees and literally dozens of kids they brought with them were all smiles and really put their hearts into the project.  Domtar has a remarkable family-friendly culture that seems built around serving others.”

Thank you to Domtar for the ongoing support of SCA youth conservation and pollinator habitat restoration programs and to HDIS for joining our efforts to conserve parks and green spaces.
