On Saturday, August 14th SCA Bay Area Alumni left the cold and foggy city of San Francisco and traveled across the Golden Gate Bridge in search of sunny skies. REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) had graciously invited SCA Alums to attend their Beach Party at China Camp State Park in San Rafael, CA. Alums mingled with community members who were also there participating in REI classes.
Soaking up the sun, alums relaxed in REI hammocks and dipped their toes in the cool bay water. While dogging the curious bees, the group discussed their SCA experiences from over the years and what keeps them coming back for more. Cathy Malina, National High School Program Alum 2000 & 2001, enthusiastically reminisced on her service days. “My summers serving on SCA crews in backcountry Alaska and along the Appalachian Trail were foundational experiences, and they inspired my decision to become an environmental lawyer. I think it’s wonderful that SCA is organizing events like these to bring the alumni community together — it’s a terrific way for all of us to share our experiences, stay engaged in conservation, and continue to give back.”
The highlight of the day was demoing the kayaks and stand up paddleboards. Everyone in attendance was able to take out the different types of kayaks including an origami style folding kayak! A few brave alums tested their balance on the SUP’s.
SCA would like to extend a huge thank you to the Bay Area REI stores for inviting our alums to participate in their Beach Party. We all had a great time playing on the water!
