400 Volunteers Come Together for Find Your Park Days of Service in NYC & DC

Through the support of American Express, SCA brought together almost 400 volunteers this weekend to mark the 9/11 National Day of Service & Remembrance with #FindYourPark Day of Service Events in New York City and Washington, DC.

In New York City on Friday, September 11th, volunteers gathered at Governors Island National Monument directly across New York Harbor from the World Trade Center. After observing a Moment of Silence to commemorate the victims and survivors of 9/11 and the first responders and volunteers who gave back in the wake of the tragedy, over 250 volunteers dispersed across the island to continue the ethic of service. Working with Governors Island National Monument, the Trust for Governors Island, and the Governors Island Alliance, groups built new fencing for the island’s community gardens, removed weeds and invasives, washed windows and restored exhibits at historic Fort Jay and Castle Williams, and prepared for the construction of a new greenhouse nursery to increase sustainability on the island.

The very next day in DC, almost 150 volunteers came out on September 12th — despite heavy rain showers — to give back at Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove along the George Washington Memorial Parkway, within view of the Pentagon. Volunteers worked to clean leaves and debris from the memorial, remove invasives along the riverfront, and build new picnic tables for use across the park.

These events were among the first of 18 large-scale service projects SCA will organize in partnership with American Express to celebrate the National Park Service Centennial and Find Your Park campaign in cities across the country.
