On Thursday (Oct 28) night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow closed her program with a rather tasty morsel, reporting that Hillary Clinton has pledged to maintain the White House Kitchen Garden if she is elected.
The Kitchen Garden was planted in the Spring of 2009 by First Lady Michelle Obama with help from local students. White House chefs use produce from the garden for preparing meals for the First Family, as well as for official functions like state dinners. Additionally, some of the harvest is donated to Miriam’s Kitchen, a homeless shelter just a few blocks from the White House.
Abandoning all pretense of objectivity, Maddow quickly endorsed the idea of giving the Kitchen Garden “four more years.” In addition to advancing the notions of nutrition and sustainability, the garden also gives root to puns like “Kale to the Chief.”
But Maddow soon revealed her real motivation, concluding her show by stating over the photo below: “If Michelle Obama’s final gift to the country is a steady stream of images of Bill Clinton tilling the soil in gardening gear, weeding and dead-heading stuff, that would be a legacy to celebrate.”
Like the Kitchen Garden, that image is also from the Spring of 2009 when President Obama, Michelle Obama, Vice President and Mrs. Biden, and President Clinton all joined a crew of SCA volunteers on an Earth Day tree-planting project at Kenilworth Park. Who knows? Next year, the White House may need an intern with a green thumb.
