A Monumental MonuMeet

•

Celebrating the Re-Opening of the Washington Monument

The Washington Monument reopened recently, following 2 years and $15M worth of repairs after damage sustained during a 2012 earthquake. The Department of Interior and the National Park Service celebrated the occasion with a ceremony on the National Mall, MC’d by Al Roker and attended by Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis, American Idol winner Candice Glover, and… SCA Social Media Coordinator Joe Thurston? Joe was invited to cover the event on SCA’s social media channels, plus participate in the first ever DOI instameet along with 11 other public lands loving Instagrammers. The day culminated with a trip to the top of the freshly restored monument where attendees talked with Secretary Jewell and got their pictures taken by Washington Post photographers.

It was an amazing experience, and quite an honor to be involved. For full social media coverage of the event, head to SCA’s Storify.
