Park Makeover in advance of “Red, White and You” July 5 Fireworks Display
(HAMTRAMCK, MI.)—Hamtramck firefighters, school employees and others dedicated to restoring Veterans Park are getting an extra hand – in fact, hundreds of them. The Student Conservation Association (SCA), the national leader in youth service and stewardship, is joining forces with local residents and Destination America, a Discovery Communications network, to provide Veterans Park with a major makeover in advance of the city’s Red, White and You fireworks display on July 5th.
SCA, a nonprofit organization that provides young adults with career-enhancing conservation service opportunities in parks, forests and communities nationwide, is recruiting more than 100 volunteers from its Detroit conservation crews and the Hamtramck community for a full day of brush-cutting, weed-whacking, rubbish removal and other improvements. The clean-up begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes at 4:00 p.m. Residents wishing to join Friday’s clean-up project are asked to register at www.thesca.org/hamtramck. Lunch, water and a commemorative tee shirt will be provided to all participants.
“We can’t think of a better way to salute the Hamtramck firefighters and school staff who started this effort than by joining them in resurrecting this beloved park and ensuring its role as a vital community gathering place for years to come,” states SCA Detroit Program Manager Amit Weitzer. “The response from local residents has been awesome and we are grateful to city leaders and Destination America for allowing us to participate.”
Hamtramck’s spirit of self-sufficiency was a key factor in winning a spectacular Independence Day celebration in the second annual Red, White and You contest, sponsored by Destination America, the only television network that celebrates the people, places, and stories of the U.S., and national weekly magazine USA WEEKEND.
“The Hamtramck Fire Department is both humbled and happy to be selected in the Red, White & You contest and to receive the support of the community and SCA volunteers,” said Fire Chief Paul Wilk. “We look forward to working with so many friends on Friday and showing everyone just where Hamtramck’s heart is.”
Launched in March, the Red, White & You contest received more than 2,500 entries from Americans nationwide sharing moving stories of why their towns deserve an all-American celebration. The Hamtramck Fire Department entered the competition on behalf of city residents. The network awarded a grand prize to Hamtramck, which has persevered in a difficult economy, so the community can officially commemorate their first Fourth of July in more than three decades. Ad additional grand prize has been awarded to Prescott, AZ, a town still recovering from the devastating wildfires that tragically claimed the lives of 19 brave firefighters.
