The CWPP is getting ready to print the final plotter maps for Carteret County this week. Alison and Meghan teamed up to interview fire chiefs from ten fire districts in Carteret: Atlantic, Cedar Island, Davis, North River, Otway, Sea Level, South River, Stacy, Stella, and Western Carteret. Brian, the County Ranger, scheduled the interviews for two per day, giving us a bit of time during lunch to explore Beaufort, which was dubbed the “Coolest Small Town in America” in 2012. We enjoyed walking around the waterfront and stopping for ice cream between meetings. In our off time, we took a few excursions back to Carteret County. Meghan, Amber, and I (Alison that is) explored Fort Macon, a fort that was used during the Civil War and later converted to a state park. We watched a battle skirmish and learned about the history of the fort and its role in the Civil War. After our time at Fort Macon, we went to the aquarium and got to see numerous sea turtles, pet manta rays, and observe many sheepshead fish. Brian graciously gave us numerous sheepshead filets after one of his fishing excursions. They were delicious! A few weekends ago, we journeyed back out to Beaufort to explore the Maritime Museum, which gave us a history of boat construction and commercial fishing in NC, as well as the history of Blackbeard’s ship. Stay tuned for more updates from Craven and Brunswick Counties!
