1: Meet the Crew
We’ve made it! After almost two weeks of valuable Corp Member Training at the Colorado Fire Camp, we have reached Anchorage, shopped till we dropped for field supplies, and set up an awesome camp. The past few weeks have been a great chance to brush up on trails skills, get oriented to the work ahead, and get to know each other. Wer’e all eager to get to work on the projects ahead at Mt. Baldy, Denali National Park, Wrangell St.-Elias National Park, Kenai Fjords National Park, and Chugach National Forest. We’ll post weekly on the latest work progress and Alaskan adventures, stay tuned!
For now, here’s a chance for you to get to know a little about each of us:
Hi! I’m Melissa Guziak, coming to you from northern Vermont. I recently graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with degrees in Biology and Environmental Studies. In college I played a lot of ultimate frisbee, biked the cornfields of Ohio, traveled, backpacked, honed my college cooking skills, and skied as much as I could. I enjoy learning about the different ways individuals value and appreciate their environment; I’m looking forward to get to know a new landscape in Alaska and to see how others view these surroundings.
My name is Evan Trumbower, I grew up in Western New York State. I attended the University of Maryland and majored in History and American Studies. I love to travel, hike, backpack and to play my banjo. This spring I was lucky enough to trek the Himalayas in Nepal and I hope to return soon. I am very excited to serve in the SCA and experience a summer in Alaska. This summer I plan on working hard, learning a lot and gaining some great experience that I can apply to becoming a member of a wildland firefighter crew in the future.
Hi, I’m Jaynae from Victorville, California, I’m currently in my 7th year of conservation work. If I’m not in nature working or camping, I’ll usually be hanging out with friends in a music studio working on music. This is my first time going to Alaska so I’m excited to see wildlife, nature and taste the local cuisine Alaska has to offer.
My name is Tyler Warner, born and raised in Fremont Nebraska. I am an Environmental Studies student at University of Nebraska at Omaha, going into my final year. I am an avid-outdoorsman, enjoy camping, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, really anything that gets me lost in the wilderness. This will be my second summer on a trail crew, last summer was great and I know this summer will be just as fun. Can’t wait to see Alaska, it should be a little different than what I’m used to in Nebraska.
Hello, my name is Sammy Pressman from Madison, Wisconsin. I am currently a student at the University of Michigan and study Earth Science and Physics. When I’m not saving the Earth, you can find me traveling, riding my bike, or cooking. I am excited for this summer is Alaska because I enjoy time in the outdoors and have never been to the Great Land.
Hello! I am Lesley Seale, the project leader for the Alaska Corp Team 1. I grew up in Colorado and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where I graduated with a degree in Environmental Studies, and Biology and Geology minors. Moving frequently in a military family and taking road trips growing up gave me an itch for experiencing and exploring the world. I enjoy a game of pick up soccer, trail running, identifying plants, baking bread, listening to NPR and an occasional knitting project. I’ve gotten involved volunteering and working for conservation causes over the past few years, including two summer in Kodiak, Ak, and am hooked to being able to make a difference and be part of conservation in such an active way. I am excited to work throughout Southcentral Alaska and experience it with a group of wonderful people.
