Youth Crew Field Lead and Education Intern

This position will support the Lava Beds National Monument Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program by assisting the YCC crew leader (a Lava Beds National Monument employee) with organizing and implementing in a variety of field projects and educational programs for the eight-person YCC crew.  The SCA iintern will work with the YCC crew leader to lead eight high-school age youth in various resource conservation and maintenance tasks. Typical projects include: trail maintenance, wildlife surveys, exotic plant monitoring and removal, cave cleaning, cave surveys, nursery and greenhouse care, native plant revegetation. Responsibilities include: project scheduling, providing environmental education lessons and safety training to YCC crew members; assisting with organizing daily equipment needs, using GPS and GIS equipment for data collection and processing, leading YCC crew in the implementation of vegetation, cave, and facility restoration projects. This position will also support the Resource Management Division with various projects such as taking weather observations, and supporting natural and cultural resource management projects.  Cross-training is available with other park divisions (i.e. interpretation), per your interests.EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Lava Beds National Monument is an amazing crossroads of cultures, ecosystems, and geophysical regions. There are plenty of opportunities to hike, bike, cave, and visit cultural landscapes within the monument and a huge variety of recreational opportunities exists nearby in northern California and southern Oregon.  Destinations such as Crater Lake, Lassen Volcanic, and Redwoods National Parks, and Mt. Shasta National Forest, are nearby. Deep forests, open deserts, mountain lakes, deep caverns, and the Pacific Ocean…everything is within a few hour’s drive, sometimes much closer. The natural areas and the cultural history of our region provide a forum for many educational interests and activities, and the work done within the Division of Resource Management will impart unique knowledge, skills, and experiences only available through an internship within the National Park Service.

Required Skills: 
Ability and willingness to undergo a required criminal history background check; map reading and backcountry navigation skills; good physical condition; ability to work as a team and independently; willingness to use herbicide (Roundup).
