The Dillon Ranger District on the White River National Forest is in Silverthorne, Colorado. It is located 70 miles west of Denver up in the mountains at an elevation of 8,800 feet. The Continental Divide runs through this area providing opportunities for hiking in high alpine terrain. Approx. 35,000 people reside in Summit County which is home to four major ski areas: Copper Mtn, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin and Keystone. There are plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities in the area including hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rafting, and much more.
The intern will work with the Forest Service Wilderness Ranger. He/she will assist with trail maintenance, visitor contacts, campsite rehabilitation and inventory, sign and trailhead maintenance, volunteer projects, and talk with forest visitors to explain regulations and answer questions. The days will involve extensive hiking/backpacking in challenging high alpine terrain along with performing trail maintenance projects.
