The Beaverhead-Deerlodge Forest at 3.2 million acres is the largest forest in Region 1. Located in Southwest Montana and straddling the Continental Divide, the B-D contains a variety of habitats, ranging from timbered mountains and jagged granite peaks, to open, rolling sagebrush expanses. There are seven ranger districts with a diverse and challenging work program that focuses primarily on range management, recreation opportunities, timber harvest and mineral extraction. Southwest Montana and the B-D are known for its outstanding elk hunting and Blue Ribbon trout streams.

Primarily back-country and Wilderness trail maintenance and reconstruction projects. Work will consist of, but not limited to, logging out, brushing, clearing rocks and boulders, installing and maintaining drainage structures, building crib walls, turnpikes, puncheons, constructing minor re-routes, and re-treading. Most of the work will require the use of primitive tools such as cross cut saw, axe, shovel, pulaski, and pick mattocks. This position will operate in the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness, and the surrounding National Forest land, most of which is classified as Roadless. The position will typically work 8-10 days at a time, including weekends. Position will require camping out in the field the majority of the time. Applicants should possess the ability to hike 10-12 miles/day with a 50-60 pound pack, ability to lift and/or roll boulders up to 250 pounds, and an ability to perform in all weather conditions, and at elevations up to 10,000’. Prior experience with pack and saddle stock is desired, but not required.
