Wilderness Strike Team
Klamath Falls is located at the intersection of Highways 39, 66, 97, and 140. Medford/Ashland, located 70 miles to the southwest. Klamath Falls is ideally situated approximately one and one half hours from Ashland, Oregon, five hours from Portland, Oregon, six hours from San Francisco, California, and four and one half hours from Reno, Nevada.
Intern will compose part of a small strike team (2-4 members) to implement strategic action plan for Mountain Lakes and Gearhart Wildernesses that achieves minimum goals of the US Forest Service 10-Year Wilderness Stewardship Challenge. Teams will inventory the three field elements: 1) Invasive Plants; 2) Opportunities for Solitude and; 3) Recreation Site Inventory, and complete information management for the identified wildernesses. Intern will also be tasked with providing visitors with information concerning safety, area information, travel routes, outdoor ethics, and authorized use of wilderness areas. Intern may conduct foot patrols in wilderness areas, making visitor contacts and providing resource information and education. In order to conduct work assignments intern will need to acquire skill in the use of map and compass, backcountry navigation, minimum impact hiking and camping; and the ability to routinely carry backpacks up to 40 pounds in steep terrain and in adverse weather conditions. Wilderness duties involve extensive periods of standing and walking, in many cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying tools, field equipment, etc. Work is carried out in setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, and adverse weather conditions.
