Weed Control Intern

Categories:

Follow the Green River through the semi-arid Uintah Basin of northeast Utah to Ouray National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) with 5 flooded bottoms that attract thousands of waterfowl and wetland birds. The cottonwood riparian habitat plays a significant role for numerous migrating and nesting birds along the entire Upper Colorado River Ecosystem. Bluffs border the river valley and wetland bottoms with semi-desert shrublands and grasslands making up the rest of the Refuge. Over 230 species of birds and over 310 species of plants have been recorded on Ouray NWR plus a variety of fish, including endangered fish, and mammals such as elk, mule deer, pronghorns, river otters, and prairie dogs.

Intern will be part of a weed control team for Ouray National Wildlife Refuge (NWR).  Most work will be conducted by spraying weeds from an ATV but some control will also be by hand removal or control.  Intern will also assist with monitoring of weed control test plots.  Intern will be come familiar with use of ArcMap and a Trimble GPS unit to map weeds treated.  Intern may also assist with any large maintence projects the Refuge is undertaking and a biological survey with Refuge Biologist.
