The Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway NRA is located on the northern most tip of the Jersey Shore at the entrance of New York Harbor, housing is provide in single bedroom dormitories, the closest shopping is located six miles from the park in Highlands NJ , there are great opportunities to experience the New York Metro Area via ferry or train.

INTERN IS REQUIRED TO BE FLUENT IN SPANISH.START AND END DATE IS FLEXIBLEYou will provide informal interpretation and education on water safety to visitors who are using non-guarded beaches on Sandy Hook. Over the past five years Gateway NRA has had more than 20 visitor related drowning park–wide, the majority of which have been of Latino background. You will educate the visitors on the dangers of swimming in these areas, including recognizing characteristics of water depth, current changes and man-made hazards in the water. In addition, you will provide instruction of what the visitor can do if they encounter danger and how they can get help. You will also be responsible for documenting visitor contacts and providing a season end report on the how the program was conducted. This position is supervised by the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection and the Unit Coordinator.EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Because of Sandy Hook's proximity to New York City and the Jersey Shore you will have a variety of opportunities to take advantage of each areas vast recreational and cultural experiences. Beyond working in the Sandy Hook Unit you will also get to evaluate how the message you are providing can be used in the other two units of the park by assisting with developing the next phase of the program.
