The Headquarters and Visitor Center for the National Bison Range Complex are located at Moiese, Montana, in the Mission Valley, about 1 hour north of Missoula, MT and 2 hours south of Glacier National Park.
Located in the scenic Mission Valley of western Montana, the National Bison Range is part of a large Refuge complex, established and managed for its namesake, the American bison. The Bison Range Complex provides incredible wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. Besides being in a beautiful place to work and play, we hope to provide a well-rounded exposure to real Refuge work in a wonderful setting, to encourage our intern to pursue a career with the Fish and Wildlife Service. The Bison Range is recruiting an intern to assist public use staff to help with the large numbers of visitors and to provide enhanced interpretive opportunities. This program provides a good learning ground for those seeking experience in recreation, interpretation and outdoor education fields.Primary responsibilities include working at the Visitor Center information desk with direct contact with visitors and students. Information on wildlife viewing opportunities, access, safety, and rules and regulations about the Range are dispensed along with local information. Informational videos are shown and training will be given on the audio-visual equipment used in the Visitor Center. Orientation talks and question-and-answer sessions may be offered to schools and tour groups. Interns monitors the Visitor Center facility to assure that displays, visitor areas, and restrooms are clean and presentable.Interns will be involved with entrance fee collections, including record keeping, balancing cash, and maintenance of accurate records on collections and types of passes purchased and used. They will learn how to handle cash in a responsible and accountable manner, taking appropriate measures for cash and personal security. Interns would also assist with the sales of books, posters and postcards through the Glacier Conservancy outlet.Visitor Center staff periodically drive the scenic road to gather wildlife sighting information for the Information Desk. They will also answer questions and provide informal interpretation to visitors. Interns assist visitors in case of emergencies. Interns will also assist visitors with medical, safety and vehicle problems. Basic first aid and CPR training are provided. Radio protocol and usage training will be provided to all staff. Scheduling will attempt to give all front desk staff, interns and volunteers time to work on special projects, attend training, participate in field activities and other activities to enhance and expand their experience and skills. Appropriate training will be provided as needed.Boots are required for field work (lightweight hiking boots are adequate). All other personal protection equipment that might be needed will be provided. Due to the need to collect money for fees and booksales, this position is not eligible for an Americoprs Education Award.
